A fascinating article, but I'm still trying to work out the difference between the "a" vowel sounds in father and fat, other than what comes from preparing for "th" as opposed to "t".  And the article considers only the so-called standard English that few speak unless when trying to be "correct". There are endless variants in actual  UK spoken English, most of them as valid as the "standard".
