Colin,
I'll give you a hint - "the boak" is not a short black Andalusian cloak, at least not in our area. There are various kinds of boak, eg, the dry boak. In the Herald letters page a couple of months ago there was a learned discussion on the range of boaks to be found - a number of medical people contributed. It can be a noun, as in, "He gives me the boak," or a verb, as in "I near boaked ma ring up." The term is onomatopoeic, and before anyone asks I did look up the spelling.
