hugh,

sorry to hear about your vehicular malady. only vw and porsches should have the engine on the back seat!

as your last car has expired - get another one; then you can go to, and return from, glasgow anytime of day or night.

from intuition and in-depth research I have come up with the following definitions of your words, none of which i have ever heard before :-

shilpit having a sallow or unhealthy appearance, feeling low and generally - fed up, effed n far from home.
stop the press - my spellchecker had just suggested, "shoplifting"

boak to throw up or a short black andalusian cloak

dumfoornert dumb-for-nothing, flabbergasted, surprised - as in WTF

whitrick a white rat or mouse - or watch this trick as in "seen this one before?"

I don't recall any particular local words in caithness, not unusual really when you realise that 90% of thurso (anyway) were not even scottish . I did notice that the strongest scottish accents were in your area and as one went north the accent went from vivace sforzando to diminuendo mezzo piano - kind-of.

ps - looks as if john will never tell us what was wrong with that picture

Colin,

The last car we had expired not far from here one evening a few years ago and was towed home by the RAC. I worked on it till I got sick of it. I last saw it on the back of a lorry taking it away for scrap with its engine on the back seat. Come to think of it, having the engine on the back seat could have been the problem all along.

You want some words to decipher? How about shilpit (adjective), boak (verb), dumfoonert (adjective), skelly (adjective), whitrick (noun). I'm cheating with the first one - it's not common around here. Had you no dialect in Caithness?

Hugh.
