Salaams,
with reference to Tom Gardner's last, where exactly in Aussie are you and were you a £10 Pom? Two of my uncles emigrated to New Zealand under the said scheme, it worked out well for one but not the other. It was during the fifties, just after the coronation and the eldest Tom thought he'd be OK with the trade he'd learned in the army during the war, it might have been but the dreaded cancer intervened and he returned home mid sixties to die. The younger one, Jack,  had in laws out there already, Italians who'd emigrated from Italy after the war and had set up a market garden which turned into a thriving business, it may still be for all I know. I remember it being a terrible time, I was only a nipper, we had a farewell party but it was more like a wake, the jollity was forced and fabricated if you know what I mean, it all seemed so final and was as it turned out though Jack and his Italian wife Gina did return a couple of times for a visit, I never saw them because I was away, never seen any of my cousins either.
Oh, the subject matter, proper jobs, it was your statement re your offspring's not being interested in farming, I can understand it really, the farmers round here are as poor as church mice compared to most, common agricultural policy or not and the hours they put in are astronomical compared to what is supposed to be a thirty20eight hour week, thirty five is currently hitting the dirt. It took a great deal on my part to accept that our eldest son can make a damn good living sat in front of a computer screen all day punching keys, he's a system analyst whatever that is, in America. He cracks up when I ask him when is he going to get a 'proper job!'
                                             BR Fred
