Now, tussle over mobile language

Statesman News Service
DARJEELING, Sept. 29:

The All Gorkha Students Union (AGSU) has demanded the change of
operative language of mobile services in the Nepali speaking belt of
Siliguri, Dooars, Kurseong, Kalimpong, Darjeeling and Sikkim from
Bengali to Nepali for the convenience of the public.

The AGSU, an apolitical body, has been involved in resolving Hill
related problems since 1994. It was affiliated to the GJMM for some
months but disassociated soon. At present it functions independently.

“Majority of the Hill people are deprived of using mobile services to
its fullest extent because the service instructions are issued only in
Bengali, Hindi and English of which we have little knowledge,” said
AGSU general secretary Mr Hemant Rai today.

Along with waiving the processing charge from mobile top-up cards, the
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), in its new set of
directives has stressed the use of local language, as operators would
venture into semi-urban and rural areas.

“To make services more customer friendly, the Trai directed telecom
companies to issue tariff related instruction in the regional
language. Since Nepali is recognised under the VIIIth Schedule of the
Constitution, the language should be implemented instead of Bengali in
these areas,” Mr Rai said.
