hi fred

I appreciate very much your expose of that funny old race and the french psyche, the use of the gallows in a dispute and at a wedding is kind of unusual. nor did I know there exist different laguages in that country!

I get the guillotine and the sword, but what was the wheel? I imagine a 2 metre diametre thing, rather like a very heavy horse drawn (could be pulled by a group seeking revenge, I suppose) cricket pitch roller, under which the unfortunate miscreant is inexorably squashed to death - rather like road kill but much slower.....

you say you highly recommend emile zola and his series of books, but confess that one or two you put down because they were too depressing. I'm not into depression either so please recommend one of his less depressing books to start me off.

please keep up your impressions of the french - it's good stuff., I want to know more. also their views on the brits, that should be really interesting.

and by the way Hugh, RLS's, "Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes" has been delivered to me and I am reading it now. It may be one of the greatest pieces of literature in the english language, but it must certainly be the thinnest.

au revoir

colin t
