Hi Colin,
if you say its bad where you are try living in France. It did use to be OK and if your an ex government employee of any persuasion receiving index linked pensions then there's nowt to worry about, but on the other hand if you belonged to the private sector and payed for your own pension as well as the ex government employees then there's plenty to ponder and then rant about. A couple of months ago some retired poor soul living in 'Little Britain', Dordogne to the French declared in an ex pat newspaper that because her government pension had shrunk by nearly twenty per cent then the British government should adjust their pensions accordingly, I'm still awaiting my new tax assessment to pay for it!
I'm replying here on behalf of France and these are as of today and an average. Diesel is about £4.60 a gallon, petrol £5.07; whiskey and gin about £11 a bottle, cheaper can be purchased but that's if you intend to use it as paint stripper, Lidl do an acceptable cheap one at about £9, whiskey single malts start at £20 or so. A Pain (loaf) is about 80c and butter comes in at about £2.40 a half kilo, wine is cheap and palatable bottles start at about £4.00. I'm now off out to search for a job that would suit a grumpy old fart!
