fred, you've been following me around...................

my purnea dates were a year out - should be 1963/64. 3eo was the excellent dougy daniels from glasgow, followed by a very devout muslim from karachi. can't remember the 4eo at all. the 5eo was a snub nosed little aussie whose name escapes me but was meticulous in dress, he would spend an hour polishing his black shoes to a mirror finish.

the old man was a useless old sod who resided in oz - granny somebody. chick alexander from dundee was the mate (he passed away about 6 years ago). graham moon, another aussie was 2o. 3o was a raucous and randy indian gentleman whose name I have forgeotten.  we had 2 deck cadets who moon used to terrorise. thanks to the old man and chief steward, the food was the worst I had in BI.

after a spell of leave I was 2eo chupra (ceo baby face smith, bearsden, glasgow - he of model train fame). before him the ceo was andy mackie.  

after another spell of leave I was 2eo chakdara (ceo harry byers, sunderland). ceo was arthur hughes -another scotsman. 3eo was an excellent darts player from scotland - and we had some great darts evenings.

why was the chakdara engine rebuilt in 1966/7

heard the name dave lassiter - didn't know him. didn't know tag wright.

does anyone know any of the aforementioned shipmates?

             simply because I remember , I think, Tom in Gympie remembering that he'd sailed on her, I also crossed the North Sea in/on Sir Geraint and Chupra. When on Chakdara we came down from Scotland having had the engine rebuilt in Glasgow in sixty six/seven etc via the north east coast and I know I never went north of Dover on the Bedivere, that sums up my time in BI ships besides Devonia, nineteen sixty five to mid seventy. On Purnea my Chief was the excellent, the late Dave Lassiter as previosly mentioned on the other site, Tag Wright was the second, he of the morning creme de menthe frappes, some ship and some trip. Oh yes, the whole experience made me the sad cynical bastard that I am today!
