An Extract: Some reporters also fear that corporations’ concerns tend to prevail even when public health is at stake.
Jet Schouten, a reporter with Dutch TV show Radar, who has been covering safety issues tied to medical devices for years, said she was “flabbergasted” when her country’s authorities explained the reason they weren’t publishing all the adverse event reports they receive.

Their response to Schouten and the daily Trouw put it simply: “The relationship between the inspectorate and manufacturers of medical devices, which is indispensable for the effective monitoring of the profession, will be disproportionately damaged by the disclosure of medical data.”

However, the women our local partners Inkyfada spoke with said they were given very little information before or after their operation. Once they were back in France the only recourse they had was a Whatsapp number to speak with their surgeons – even after they had reported complications.

And so it begins. One of the first Americans arrested in relation to the Panama Papers had his first day in court last week. Massachusetts accountant Richard Gaffey pleaded “not guilty” in the Southern District of New York court.

It appears the case will take a while, with more than 500 gigabytes of data for lawyers to sift through (we know how they feel). In India, doctors are being paid in innovative but questionable ways, and our South Korean partners found issues relating to devices – even when the government didn’t want to release the information.

In Europe <https://icij.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0d48a33b1c24d257734cc2a79&id=20270cb83e&e=10ca147454>, a criminal investigation has been opened in Switzerland following ICIJ partners’ findings, and a health minister in the Netherlands called the reporting “incredible.” Both reactions followed publication of true stories of patients, harmed by various devices.

And, in Latin America <https://icij.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0d48a33b1c24d257734cc2a79&id=d53fb001c8&e=10ca147454>, 39 reporters from 11 organizations found that medical devices were being imported in some countries despite being banned elsewhere. They also revealed corruption affecting the industry.
