Frank --

Did you see the news this week? The truth about the Macquarie Harbour
fish kills has finally come out – leaked to the media by someone in
Government with a conscience.

Sprung on live radio, the Director of Tasmania’s EPA was forced to
confirm that a staggering number - *1.35 MILLION salmon* - were killed
in Macquarie Harbour over summer.

Thousands of you petitioned the salmon companies to release this
information – but all three companies and the government refused to.

Click here to get this information in front of as many Australians
buying salmon as possible!

We’re told the majority of these fish died of disease. But what
proceeded disease outbreaks in Macquarie Harbour was 5 years of criminal
mismanagement – over-stocking that created faecal mounds, bacteria mats
and marine dead zones on the seafloor; oxygen levels so low salmon swam
around with their mouths gaping open, desperate for breathe.

*If you keep animals in this environment, they get sick and die.*

/POMV (Pilchard orthomyxovirus) is the disease that has broken out in
Macquarie Harbour. Impacts include haemorrhages in the eye, gills and
skin and necrosis in the liver, kidney and heart. /

In any other industry this number of dead animals would trigger a public
investigation. *But did you know that fisheries companies are exempt
from animal welfare laws?* This legal loophole dates back to a time
before scientists had done the research to establish that fish feel pain.

*So what are we going to do about it?*

Tasmania’s politicians refuse to stand up to the salmon companies –
which are the biggest fisheries companies in Australia. That is why we
need to communicate directly to Australians buying salmon.

You have already funded us to develop a shopping guide on salmon that
tells people the truth about animal welfare and environmental damage and
gives a colour rating of the three companies’ performance – Green,
Amber, or in the case of Macquarie Harbour, RED.  We’ve done the
research, we’ve given it to an independent scientific expert for peer
review and we’ve fundraised to post copies of the salmon guide to
restaurants and community groups all around Australia.

*But if we’re going to compete with the marketing budget of Austalia’s
largest fisheries companies, we need to launch our shopping guide with a
bang, and get it in front of as many Australians who eat salmon as
possible.*

Social media makes this possible./For around $0.75, we can get one new
person to click on our salmon guide and read the truth about what is
happening in Tasmania./ Alone, we wouldn’t get very far. But if we all
chip in, together we can invest in some facebook real estate.

/And we’re a charity –/ so /your donation is fully tax deductibe./

salmon on their plates. *
