Another embarrassing breakdown in the Royal Navy's Type 45 fleet, as HMS DIAMOND is towed in to Devonport late afternoon July 11. She was led in by Serco's SD FORCEFUL with SD ADEPT as rearguard and SD FAITHFUL as escort. Diamond recently completed a refit in home port Portsmouth and was exercising in the Channel when she developed a propulsion problem and came in to Plymouth Sound for assistance. The Type 45's are proven brilliant air defence protection but regularly have power problems and all six ships will undergo major engine replacement. They have broken down in high temperatures in the Gulf and Duncan broke down outside Plymouth last year becoming the second one to be towed in to Devonport without power . Diamond makes it three.
