Mike, The mind boggles - they are actually ugly. The "tradition" of the kilt only goes back as far as the one German Geordie wore when he visited Edinburgh - it started a fashion. Ladies wear a skirt, not the kilt. I last wore it as a Boy Scout. Hugh.
