If you’ve been following ICIJ since the Panama Papers, we’ve got an interesting story with new details about the unnamed clients mentioned as part of the first U.S. Panama Papers criminal case.

The indictment, which charged two men who had worked for the law firm that set up offshore money hideaways and client and an accountant, discussed but didn’t name four additional clients, who allegedly played key roles in offshore tax schemes, so we dug through the 11.5 million Panama Papers files to work out who they were. Meet Marianna Olszewski, William Ponsoldt, Christopher Ponsoldt and Jurgen Wolff.

Our Implant Files coverage, of course, continues. Come behind the scenes of our hunt for answers. Together with our partners, we filed more than 1,500 requests for information on medical device safety from governments around the world.

Many were denied. Others were answered with documents so blacked-out that they were effectively useless, including the very insightful: “The patient XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX …”

As our Japanese partner Yasuomi Sawa told us, “disclosure and public scrutiny are very important in finding what is wrong in our community.” The search continues.

Over the past two weeks, more than 1,800 patients responded to a survey by ICIJ and its partners to report issues with their medical devices. The most common complaint? Breast implants.

It’s an issue crossing borders – we look to Brazil, Korea and Canada where our partners reported on breast implants and some of the serious issues patients can face.

ICIJ reporter Sasha Chavkin writes about what he found while investigating breast implant safety – and it wasn’t just hidden injuries.

“The emergence of women-led patient groups as a powerful voice shaping the rules for device safety felt like the most hopeful sign of all,” he writes.
