Either he's gone, or the net is down. it said. In 1986 my wife was in what is often called Intensive Care, after a major head op, technically a brain op. On the first afternoon I was seated by her bedside and the machine was beeping away. Then it stopped, and I panicked. A nurse came running down the ward and smote the machine with a mighty smite, whereupon it started to beep again. "That bloody machine," she said, "will be the death of me." It was a Glasgow hospital, of course.
