The other day we were in a cafe having coffee and a pastry.  Sitting in a nice corner seat nearby were two teenagers, young girls maybe 12-14.  Each had a phone grasped in a hand, and a drink and a bun in front of them - I couldn't say how smart the phones were. They were in our line of sight, and over the 10-15 minutes before they left, they didn't glance at each other, never mind converse.  How they made a decison to leave I cannot say.
