Mike,

A fascinating article. I'll put on a Chris Barber EP later. The closest we had to a Jazz Club in my area was the Firth of Clyde Rhythm Club, which met on Sunday nights in the early 50s on the top floor of a rather odd looking building (it's still standing). One stair down was coffee and Blue Ribands at the interval. I was a paid up member - I've still got my card. There was no resident band. Musicians from anywhere around would come down the river for a jam - sometimes from big bands playing in Glasgow. It was mostly modern jazz, but I didn't mind at all - I had eclectic tastes, tolerated by my pals. What I did mind was the 6 mile walk home.

Our local dance halls had bands mostly composed of jazz musicians. Henri Morrison's Swing Stars at Cragburn Pavilion in Gourock, my dance hall of choice, were Melody Maker Award winners. Roy Whiteford, the lead trumpet, taught me trumpet. I sat in one evening on 3rd trumpet. We played The Woodchoppers Ball, an unforgettable experience.

Was Lonnie Donegan's wife the daughter of a BI CEO?

Hugh.
