SS SIR WALTER SCOTT NAVIGATES LOCH KATRINE

Loch Katrine is the Lake in the title of Sir Walter Scotts novel Lady of the Lake. it is a fresh water loch roughly 8 miles long by 2/3 of a mile wide. The Loch is owned by Scottish Water and is the primary water reservoir for much of the City of Glasgow. Because of the danger of pollution to the drinking water of Glasgow oil fired vessels are not permitted to sail the waters of Loch Katrine, instead a biodiesel fuelled steam powered ship SS SIR WALTER SCOTT offers local tourist transport between

Trossachs Pier and Stronachlachar Built by Denny Bros Ltd at
Dumbarton, the Steam ship " SIR WALTER SCOTT " journey to
Loch Katrine was not an easy one, after sea trials she was
dismantled before being transported by barge to Inversnaid on
Loch Lomand, from there she continued her epic journey to
Stronachlach by horse drawn cart still in pieces it was by Loch
Katrine the ship was reassembled. Since her maiden voyage in
1900 the ship has gone through many changes. She still has her
original Matthew Paul & Co triple expansion steam engine, though
2007 marked the last year of her use of coal as fuel. The
steamships ships two Cochrane Wee Chieftain Boilers now run on
Bio-fuel, a kinder environmental option that helps preserve the
water supply and surrounding area. The cost to build the ship was
£4,269 including delivery charge of £2,028. Builder Denny Bros
