Mike,

Interesting, and I hope it reduces the death rate, but there is no real danger to life or limb in a simulation. I recall the old tale of the chap sitting 2nd's Orals who, when asked what steps he'd take in the event of an engine room fire, answered, "The engine room steps, three at a time." I used to ask people to say what would be their first reaction to a real fire. They all got it wrong. The first reaction is not to grab an extinguisher, it is panic. It's involuntary, and hopefully it might only last a second or two, but it's there. I had a scavenge fire and an actual fire, and I recall the feeling of shock - something alien had intruded. I pressed the tit for the former, and crossed my fingers lest a crankcase explosion blow me to kingdom come. When greater minds arrived I slowed down the engine, as instructed. The book says there are two kinds of Chiefs, (a) and (b) - (a) slow the engine down in the case of a scavenge fire, (b) stop it. For the latter I killed it with a small powder extinguisher. We had a very clean scavenge belt.

Hugh.
