Nice story with a happy ending.  However (this is not a heckle, just a reminiscence),  when I was at school we didn't have girlfriends - only cissies had girlfriends. Sitting beside a girl (often at the front of the class) was a punishment one received for misbehaving.  The classroom had a girls and a boys section.  And carving a name on a desk?? Ink stains on a desk were bad enough.  But we grew up normal.
