Almost 23, having been in Kincaid's DO for 2 years after serving my 5 years in the shops, the Apprentice Supervisor collared me and required me to tell him if I was (a) going to do my National Service, or (b) going to sea, my exemption from (a) being due to expire.  It was no contest, and I got an "interview" and a cup of tea from a retired BI CE/O in Skemorlie just down the coast. This was followed a few weeks later by the means to get uniform, etc, and a train to London and No 1 Aldgate.
