Scots Shipyard Boss Supports QE2 Clyde Bid
Engineering boss Jim McColl, speaking to the Greenock Telegraph, has said that he could support a bid to bring the QE2 back home to the Clyde. He told the local paper, once his shipyard is 'running at full pelt' he could see the yard being involved in such a project.Locals, members of the Scottish Parliament and even rivals further up the River Clyde at Clydebank, where she was built, have been gaining support all over Clydeside for the project. Support by Jim McColl, being a successful engineering businessman as well as owner of the UK's last complete commercial shipyard is seen as a real boost to the campaign to bring the former Cunard liner back to her roots.Currently the ship is in Dubai, with eyewitnesses reporting she is in a sorry state of neglect despite plans there to transform her into a tourist attraction. The Greenock Telegraph also reports that Scotland's famous lottery winners, the Weirs were approached to gauge their response. Their trust spokesperson only responded that the trust was open to all applications. Given the almost unanimous support for this project around the Clyde area and Glasgow, it seems few voices are against the idea. Many people who have responded on social media have talked of setting up a fund to help with the costs of bringing the ship back to the Clyde. The QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 was built in the 1960s by John Brown's in Clydebank, and fitting out took place in Greenock. The ship has called at the Clyde since then on a number of occasions ……. source : shippingtimes.
