Och aye, the mean Scots - what would the world do without them? I believe this myth had its origins in Aberdeen when its streets were very unbusy one flag day. It emerged that proved the Aberdonians were mean, and, by extension, the Scots. However, the late Jimmy Logan, definitely a Scot, was fond of the odd joke at the expense of Aberdonians. "We go up to Aberdeen in the summer, and spend a week with my aunties. Their terms are very reasonable." My Merseyside distant cousin (Dad's 2nd cousin), the late Robert Leslie Adam, ex-Cunard's lawyer, was fond of telling tales against his Edinburgh aunties. The most common tale told of Edinburgh aunties has them telling guests on entry, "You'll have had your tea?" Leslie's version was, "When's your bus?"

Hugh.
