John.
An excellent history. The Battle of Largs is marked every year around this
time by the Vikingar Festival- the town is full of tall hairy men in
inaccurate horned helmets, carrying large swords and spears and eyeing up
passers-by suspiciously. I understand the festival was started/revived by
some English incomers some years back.
On a tour of his Kelburne estate at Largs back in the 80s/90s, the Earl of
Glasgow told us of the Battle. Apparently his ancestors were having their
tea when the news of the Viking arrival was brought to them. It was damned
inconvenient, but they put a tea cosy over the pot, grabbed a few swords,
and went down to the beach. The rest is history.
Hugh.
