FYI…

Begin forwarded message:

Good evening John,

My regards to your brother from another old salt.

You/he might be interested to know that in addition to the 5 volumes of the WW1 official History of the (Great) War relating to the Royal Navy, H.M.S.O. published 3 volumes entitled ’The Merchant Navy’ and for any merchant seaman it is interesting to the note the title in full… the merchant Navy, not the Merchant Service, and it notes in Vol. 1, Introduction (P. 2):
'Within a few months of the opening of hostilities, the King, in a message of appreciation of the services of the merchant seamen, referred to “his Merchant Navy”…’

Original volumes are now expensive but the Naval & Military Press, in association with the Imperial War Museum, have produced reprint of all 8 books.
This is the reprint of Vol. 1:

The 3 original volumes were published in 1921, 1924 & 1929
One original edition available online through http://www.abebooks.co.uk <http://www.abebooks.co.uk/>:

The Merchant Navy, Vol 1 (History of the Great War, based on Official Documents by direction of the historical section of the Committee of Imperial Defence)

Published by Longmans, Green & Co, New York, 1921 Cost (used) £77

I have all 8 volumes in paperback reproduced by N&M Press - a lucky find in a charity shop,
Chris
