[BITList] The AWM - Australian War Memorial

G’day folks,

The AWM is more than a memorial - it is the Australian War Museum too.

Today I was there for a short time this afternoon to put in a request to see a document in the research rooms.

While I was there I heard a voice speaking at length and with knowledge about the exhibit where he was standing. He was addressing  a large groups of ‘suits’ all listening intently. It was the Director of the AWM, late Australian Ambassador to NATO & the EU, Brendan Nelson. He is also a past Minister for Health, past Minister for Defence and Leader of the Opposition.

During his talk to the ‘suits’ he mentioned that he and been with a party of schoolchildren from Mackay State High School, [just down the road from Townsville]. to the Menin Gate in Belgium.

By coincidence Michael and I visited the Menin Gate three weeks after that. And I saw the wreath that he and the students had laid at the Menin Gate.

I stopped and spoke to him this afternoon and he remembered his visit to the menin Gate with those students.

He went on speaking to the ‘suits’ and told them of the ceremony of the Sounding of the Last Post that is held every evening ay 7 pm at the Menin Gate.

And he decided that he would start something like that at the AWM. And indeed he has. Not only that but you can see it yourselves. It occurs every day AEDT at 5 pm. The ceremony is streamed live to the world, every evening.

I was there this evening. And I took this photo showing school children from five schools around Australia listening to the ceremony. There was a large crowd behind and alongside of me.
