The Windeward Bound will get $15,000 to refurbish the galley where chef Gavin Smith cooks during voyages.

COOKING three meals three times a day is tough enough, but for Gavin Smith doing it at sea in a cramped galley in the heart of a tall ship makes it all the more harder.

Luckily for Mr Smith, the sail training vessel Windeward Bound will receive a grant of more than $15,000 to refurbish the small galley as well as replace two of its old sails.

“It will be great, the storage is a bit mix and match, so it will be great to have a bit more organisation in here,” said the 29-year-old from Ireland, who lives on the boat.

Launched in 1996, the Windeward Bound provides Tasmania’s youth with an opportunity to learn new skills which will help them develop the rest of their life.

To help in this, the Tasmanian Community Fund provided the grant to refurbish the tall ship.

The ship’s first mate, Bill Burrell, said the upgrades would help the ship continue to help young Tasmanians.

“Whatever their background, it takes about a week on the ship for it to be a life-changing experience,” Mr Burrell said.
