Our local paper, the Greenock Telegraph (and Clyde Shipping Gazette), has started reprinting pages from the past (apparently there's not much fresh news around here). The 13-1-1968 edition had a report on the front page about a captain's wife trapped in the ship's funnel (MV Perry). The lady was terrified, it said, and "top engineers" from a local shipyard (destination was Aberdeen) were standing by with burning equipment. It went on, "Although no precise details of what has happened on board are available, it is thought the part of the funnel concerned was an airing cupboard. On modern ships, small exhaust pipes have taken over the funnel's function but a false funnel is usually retained in the design, and on small ships, such as the Perry, utilised as an airing cupboard".

One is always learning.

Hugh.
