Superb photos – thanks.

I knew Spike well.  He had a very quick wit but being a manic depressive if one was with him on one of his off days one had to walk on eggshells.  I was never a fan of his humour, but on one occasion he did a charity show for my mother’s Beauty without Cruelty animal welfare charity and his colleague Peter Sellers performed with Spike.  Afterwards the speed at which joked were flying between Spike & Peter was electric. 

I forget if I sent you these photos of me driving (under supervision) Battle of Britain class MANSTON.  OK there is no steering wheel to bother with, but it is not as easy as one might imagine.  And these light Bullied Pacifics are very powerful and have a tendency to spin the wheels when pulling away.  If the steam valve is not banged shut within 30 seconds one can run the white metal bearings on the main driving wheels, as the drip-feed lubrication fails.  Cost of moving the loco to a workshop with a big enough crane to free the driving wheels and fit new bearings, £10,000.  I’m a minor shareholder with Southern Locomotives and contributed to the rebuild of 34053 Sir Keith Park.
