Mike,

These people are never stuck for a shock horror subject to investigate. I have yet to hear anyone up here whose speech sounds remotely like the mostly fake sounds on Eastenders. I hear plenty of the young and not so young whose speech is utterly unintelligible to me, eg, a young lady at the bus stop yesterday. She wasn't speaking to me, and her young friend seemed to understand her, so I suppose it was OK.

Why Eastenders and not Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Neighbours, et al? How many of these odd sounding individuals were actually Glaswegians?

The question I want looked into it is: how much of the UK is now contaminated by the, "I was like ... ," "I was like that ....." phenomenon? I have heard conversations between people that were not far from: "So I was like that, and he was like that, and I was like that." Spoken very fast, lest any sense should creep in. And the other seems to understand.

Hugh.
