I was late to bed last night after watching Sky News for over 2 hours and the extra-ordinary performance of bbc executives [mark thompson, etc] being questions by mp’s over the huge severance packages given to redundant executives.

talk about artful dodgers..........................all very confident in the knowledge that ‘I’m alright, Jack’ and ‘everyone concerned was consulted’.

one of them questioned admitted his salary is 238,000 ukp. I worked this out to be about $180/hour [40 hour week]! He said it really didn’t cross his mind that the deputy director was awarded about 1 million ukp bonus. mark thompson appeared to think that the 1 million was a bit of a bargain and the bbc got off lightly with this amount.

from the evidence it appears the bbc had around 700 top executives – of which 150 got severance bonuses!
to me, 700 seems ridiculous.

again, from responses of the beeb execs I got the impression that they are in the realm of the absurd – living in a parallel universe of huge salaries and endless meetings with endless committees. ‘run-away train’ springs to mind.

what a show – quite entertaining – after all, its only public money!
