What pledge is this?  In the Cubs, all in a ring round Akela, while holding our fingers in a certain way, we used to shout, in response to Akela, "A-ke-la, we'll do our best." And she would reply, "DOB DOB DOB." And we'd shout, We'll DIB DIB DIB, Woof!" I seem to recall we jumped forward ferociously at the "woof".  What this pledged us to I cannot now say, and I doubt if I could have said at the time.  Possibly it had something to do with tolerance towards others and being good boys.

In school there were no flags, even during WW2, and no pledge bar the unspoken pledge to attend every day and don't be late or else.

I can't get my head round pledges.
