I can't now recall what we called them, but emissions scrubbers have been 
around since the early 90s, posssibly earlier. I was involved in the design 
of a vessel Kvaerner quoted for, but didn't get, and these things were to be 
fitted. And they have been used in inert gas scrubbers for years.
