Louisiana was one of 12 states where gun deaths outpaced traffic fatalities in 2010, according to anew study released Wednesday. While vehicle fatalities have typically exceeded gun deaths by a large margin nationwide, traffic deaths have dropped in recent years, the study says, and gun deaths are on the rise.

In Louisiana that year, 864 people died from gunshot wounds -- including homicides, suicides or accidental shootings -- while 795 people were killed in traffic accidents. In addition to Louisiana, gun deaths exceeded traffic fatalities in the District of Columbia, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Virginia and Washington.

The report, produced by the Violence Policy Center, a pro-gun-control organization based in Washington, D.C., analyzed the most recent data available from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
