I've been away in Malta, so I only saw the email this evening.

George Formby definitely didn't play like that, but I like old George. 
Amplification helps, as does what is obviously a first class instrument. 
Also, his fingers are unusually supple and he has great control over them. 
But these are only aids - he has to supply the rest.  A phenomenal player.
