Frank,

I agree we'd all be standing on each other's heads if the disapora came back, but are we indigenous?. Who among us can claim descent from the original inhabitants of these sceptered isles, even if we knew who these inhabitants were? They were not the Vikings, the Romans, the Saxons, the Angles or the Celts. Were they the Britons? Probably not them either - and unlikely to have been the hunter gatherer groups who spent the summers in caves round the coasts in the wake of the ice, gathering fish and shells and leaving piles of evidence, before sailing back south to warmer climes. Perhaps, while these people were littering the beaches, the forests that covered the land were inhabited by the remnants of the people who stayed behind and missed the last bus across the sinking land bridge to/from Europe. If they survived the first winters without gritters and parkas, they might have bred, but who knows what inbreeding might have done to a small population? So, who do we think we are?

Hugh.
