York station was a great place for train spotting, in fact I think I am in a couple of photo on the main platform. I used to know the times when the expresses came roaring through and where the locomotives were based by the first two digits of their numbers, I think York was 62----.
(Incidentally, York station was bombed to hell one night in 1942 and in the same raid a bomb fell near us. one landed in the garden of the house across the street from us but luckily didnt explode, the army dug for weeks but didn't find it - it's still down there some where.)
A friend got me into the loco sheds with the 2 great turntable, the place as black as hell from years of coal and soot. Many years later I visited the national railway museum in York, it was all nice and clean like a museum should be, so when I came upon the same two turntables I realized the nrm was based upon the black hole that was the loco sheds. They must have spent millions sand blasting the sooty muck off the beams and the grease off the cement floors.
The head quarters of the London and north eastern railway was in a fine building not far from the station, it's been converted into a luxury hotel.
In those days folks either worked for the Lner
(All the carriages were made in York, the locos were built in Doncaster) or worked for one of the chocolate factories -- rowntrees, Terry's, cravens and needlers.
