Hugh,

I do not know if merchant cargo ships have video aids but I know that the
ferry "Pride Of Bilbao" was the largest ferry in Britain during the 15 years
that I sailed in her 4 times a year, it had  cameras forward and aft and
port and starboard high up and low. It had altogether 6 TVs on the bridge so
they could see everything. The low port and starboard cameras for docking at
the quay.

Lookouts? you asked. Evidently none on the bulk carrier, and how the cargo 
ship managed to turn to port across the bows of the other without seeing the

bloody thing defeats me.  Steering jammed to port?
