A 23-year-old Gretna man allegedly told police that he was showing a group of friends a recently purchased AR-15 semiautomatic rifle on Sunday morning when it accidentally discharged and killed a 16-year-old friend, according to theJefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

Christian Cardon, of the 1700 block of Gulf Drive, told investigators that he had left the weapon's magazine in his vehicle prior to bringing it into the home on the 2000 block of James Drive in Marrero. However, Cardon claimed he didn't realize the weapon had a live round in the chamber.

Cardon told investigators that while he was showing the weapon to the eventual victim and three other males and a female in the kitchen, he pulled the trigger in an attempt to clear the weapon, causing it to fire and fatally shoot the victim.

The identity of the victim, who was pronounced dead on the scene, is being withheld until the Sheriff's Office notifies his next of kin.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office's 911 Center received a call about 1 a.m. Sunday from a male reporting that someone had been shot at the Marrero residence. The first responding officers located the victim, shot in his neck, lying on the kitchen floor.

A preliminary investigation conducted by homicide Detective Travis Eserman revealed the above details and concluded that the 2000 block James Drive belonged to a friend of the victim's. Investigators transported Cardon and all of the witnesses to the Criminal Investigations Bureau for questioning.
