[BITList] A Photo from Glasgow

John,

I'm just this minute back from a few days up in Fort William. Fort William is full of sturdy people with giant rucksacks, bags of groceries, maps and very sensible footwear - all nationalities.

The chap with the cone on top is indeed Arthur, Duke of Wellington. His connections with Glasgow are quite obscure, but there he is, in front of what is now the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA). The cone (often two of them) was first put up by agile students, I believe, and regularly taken down by authorioty and replaced anonymously, until authority gave up. Now and again someone (probably a maths student) removes it, and one Glasgow Councillor refused to have his photo taken with the statue until the cone was replaced.

Hugh.
