A 5-year-old New Orleans girl was on life-support machinery Sunday afternoon after being shot in the head hours earlier while playing with a gun at her home in the 2200 block of North Galvez Street, police spokeswoman Officer Hilal Williams said. The girl's name has not been released.

"All evidence does point to the fact that she shot herself," Williams said.

No one was near the child when she was playing with the gun about 10:50 a.m., she said, adding that an investigation is under way.

Information about details such as the type of weapon was unavailable.
