Mike,

Many thanks - much to study and enjoy there.

My pals and I listened to jazz from the early 50s on, but I don't recall it being a reaction to dance band music. Our early jazz heroes included Bunk Johnson, Mugssy Spanier, Bix Beiderbecke and Louis Armstrong - it took a while before British jazz was taken seriously by us. Both types of music, swing and jazz, came to our notice at the same time, and both were grist to our mill. Local dance bands played swing, and both trad and modern jazz. My tastes were more eclectic than those of my pals - I added Charlie Parker, Jerry Mulligan, et al, to my list.

Hugh.
