An interesting man. I've a shoemaker become instrument maker in the family - John Fulton, 1800-1854. I noted mention of Joseph Raphson, which triggered off "the Raphson slide" in my mind. Online all I can get are websites on the solution of non-linear equations by the Newton-Raphson method.  Is/was there really something called a Raphson slide?
