Many decades ago a pilot got lost in a dust storm and, as a consequence, he bailed out. Needless to add that the aircraft was destroyed.  The court of inquiry concluded that the pilot 'lost his bearings' due to bad weather and hence the cost of the the 'aircraft and other equipment be written off'.  The CoI proceedings went through Command and Air HQ without problems.  But a year later it came back from the auditors with a note: "While this dept has no objection to the cost of the aircraft being be written off against the State, the cost of the bearings lost by the pilot should be recovered from him."
