I seem to remember oil from shale was produced by cooking the shale 
hence the the open cast mines in Canada, Queensland has enormous fields 
also Esso was going to exploit them back in the 60s but the green lobby 
managed to shut them down they (Esso) had even built a trial plant to 
prove the economics of the field, the Germans did it in WW ll and South 
Africa has had large plants operating operating over there for years, 
plus horizontal drilling has been around for years cant see a well only 
producing 1~2K barrels being very economic unless they are desperate
frank
