Mike,

The Ben Nevis Piano Mystery has been solved a few times before.  I note 
(first article), that:
"The squad was removing litter and stones called cairns from the summit 
plateau when they spotted the top of the piano."

One doesn't usually remove stones from mountains. Litter, yes - stones, no. 
The stones are not called cairns - they are most likely the remains of 
cairns.
