I doubt if every section had questions, all of which had to be answered. 

I started school aged 5, and had completed Primary School by age 11 - I then went to Port Glasgow High School till was 15.  I was in 3 stages in the Junior Division of Primary School, and 7 in the Senior - with 6 or 7 different teachers.  We studied Reading, Spelling, Writing, Arithmetic, Composition and Grammar, fairly rigorously.  A  7th subject, General Proficiency, always puzzled us.  I don't recall any formal exams in Primary School until the final, Qualifying, class - we used many of the topics listed as 8th Grade, but were assessed day by day or week by week on that basis.

At what age was 8th grade? It's hard to judge, not knowing that.
