Colin,

We've been there in summer, when car air conditioning costs more fuel than it takes to drive the car. I exaggerate slightly.

On one visit I bought a little book called Arizona 101, an irreverent short course for new arrivals. Near the start it says the average Arizonan was born in Wheeling West Virginia. It explains why you're running around in your swimsuit in your first winter while everyone else wears winter clothes. A common remark to new arrivals is, "Haven't spent a summer here yet? Oh boy." Old timers (been there 3 summers) can relate how they made French fries on the sidewalk. The hottest recorded in Arizona was 127F. The coldest was minus 30F at Flagstaff. Most residents of Phoenix put up with temperatures below 110 F without grumbling.

You can drive from the furnace at ground level to the ski slopes on Mount Lemmon, so it's not all bad.

Hugh.
