John,

This article gives something of a clue regarding the work that thas to be done in the investigation of sweeping statements about social history. It's difficult and it's time consuming, so glib lies and lazy assumptions have time to settle. I would however, criticise his omission of anything for comparison regarding the movements of what I suppose I should call the non-whites (taking a line from his classification).

I am a member of a small group studying the social history of the Inverclyde area through the immigration experiences of the families of the memers and others. I've often (far too often for my taste) to take issue with lazy assumptions such as "the Irish came here because of the potato famine", when the record shows immigration from the 1700s onwards, rising with the general rise in population and the increase in shipbuilding jobs available with the expansion of shipbuilding. Some undoubtedly came here after the famine, but no evidence whatever has ever appeared to enable them to be distinguished from the rest.

Hugh.
