Mike,

In all of this, the "Better Together" faction rather naively assume (or wish
the listener to assume) that the UK would still exist in the wake of an
independent Scotland. It would not. The UK is a construct made up of Great
Britain, a construct itself invented at the time of the 1707 Union,
comprising Scotland and England, and a late addition, Northern Ireland. The
terms of the1707 Union underpin this, and along with independence would come
the cancellation of that Union. If and when Scotland ever achieves
independence, England, like it or not, will become independent. Both will be
divorcees, unmarried, separate, ex-spouses. Questions about EU membership
and the like should be addressed to both sides.

Hugh.
