Is it fortunate or unfortunate that we live in a time period where ‘average joe’ is able to acquire and taste those things that for the past 3000 years only the rich could contemplate?
Indeed, before the advent of TV, most of the trappings of the rich could not even be imagined let alone viewed by avjoe.
The major difference is that the rich use their own real money – not credit [in theory for this discourse].
then came the credit card and tv advertising and the revelation to ‘avjoe’ that all things are, for the first time, within grasp.
Credit cards and the banks enabled this system change and avjoe was sucked in. 
and, as you rightly say, the thought that avjoe did not need this bauble, or avjoe could not really afford that bauble was cast aside/ignored.
but this was done at avjoe’s peril - the last 30 years, every one has been living up too much. They have been spending more that they had earned and never thought about saving an amount of their wage for their retirement because the state will make up their deficiencies. 
Appears it’s getting near the time to pay the piper and some folks are in for a non too pleasant retirement.

Yes, your first paragraph is correct. In the UK all the parties are not going as far as the Republicans but they all say in one voice that the last 30 years, every one has been living up too much. They have been spending more that they had earned and never thought about saving an amount of their wage for their retirement because the state will make up their deficiencies. Now the Conservatives are beginning to pull the rug out from their feet. “They don’t like it” the workers in the country, especially the 40 year old folk do not” what they call scroungers” should be living in houses that they could not afford to buy. Now they know that they are having to have to work until they are 70 years old.
